I guess to clarify to crackedpleasures and anyone else:
We might simply differ a bit on semantics.
Admiration for a person doing good works is fine. But I always thought of "idolatry" as having an element of worship, and worshiping another human is an unhealthy thing.
Admiration = shake their hand and say, "I really appreciate the work you're doing, keep it up."
Idolization = fawn and say, "Oh my God, is it really you? I'm such a huge fan, can I have your autograph?"

I agree. I'm a huge fan of Michael Jackson,

If we assume for a minute that the courts found the correct verdict and that MJ actually is innocent...

(yeah, maybe it's a stretch but who knows how the media manipulate these things)....

Then....

A. What has Michael Jackson ever done that's wrong to anyone?
B. How must he be feeling when the world media (and everyone - down to the "man on the street") is wreaking his life and reputation.

He may be innocent (in fact, I think it's probably likely that he is innocent), but he's still screwed up in the head. Anybody who would get that much plastic surgery has issues (and he looks even worse than he did without it.)

Meh, I'm still a fan of his music, no matter what.

Every single one of the people that I've idolised has let me down. Living in southern California occassionally allows me to have contact with celebrities, and every one that I've met has been mean, impolite, and not the least bit gracious. Even moreso when they find out that I'm not there to advance their careers or enhance their images.

Moral: Never idolise anyone.

Have you ever notice stuff about them, like friends?
I'm not the type of person to be an ass to people if I was a celebrity, but inside I would be annoyed. Just think from a celebrity's point of view. People who you randomly meet only care about you because, 1) you're famous or of your looks, or 2) they admire your music, acting, writing etc. You are nothing to them because they don't have a connection to you. They have friends in their private life and behind the scenes because they are actually friends, they have a chance to get to know them well.

Now, think from the point of view of someone who is just an everyday person. Is there a better chance of you letting someone into your life by meeting them in a bar or social setting and getting to know them? Or how bout some random dude walking up to you, asking for a ciggarette and say "Hey, can we be friends?" Um, no.

Now, I've heard some nasty stories about Al Gore. They say he doesn't practice what he preaches, e.g. doesn't care about Global Warming, and doesn't give an F about people he's trying to help out politically. But do you know that he is great friends with a young Autistic kid who is a fan who had gotten a chance to meet him? That they regularly exchange emails and spend time and activities with each other? Taught the kid how to play golf!!

What you see by how a celebrity acts has nothing to do with how they really are.

Typical conversation with a celebrity...

Me: "Thank you for coming. Is there anything you need?" :D
He: "I need you to get the *&^%$#@ outta my face!"

...

Me: "Sir, we've reserved a table for..."
He: "I can find my own *&^%$#@-ing way, ya *&^%$#@!"
Me: "... you and your party."
He: "*&^%$#@ OFF!"

...

Me: "Good evening, sir."
He: "What's so *&^%$#@-ing good about it, ya *&^%$#@?! !"

...

That's the last time I ever work an awards show after-party.
