It doesn't have to be everyone. It took years for us to get over racism, and in fact we're actually not over it. Many many people in America are still racist. But does that mean Martin Luther King failed?
I think the main purpose is, in fact, understanding and acceptance. Another goal is to redirect autism related resources to more useful pursuits than what they are currently directed towards. Another goal is to prevent genetic research, for a sense of pride, and for fear they will develope post natal scans and start selective abortion like they did with Down's Syndrome.
