The library that I go to my AS meetings at had a display of books banned by Nazi Germany. They were almost all books I would strongly recommend (although I have to admit I haven't yet gotten around to reading them all). Many of them have already been mentioned.

Banned Books? That would violate the First Amendment (Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press). America simply doesn't ban books to my knowledge. I heard about the Australian bannings, although I think they reversed them after a while (In the 80s or 90s).

Most of the books you mention have caused controversy of one kind or another, but banning isn't allowed (or at least in public libraries, private libraries or libraries at private schools can do whatever they want). If you look hard enough, I'll bet you could even find books with Islamic Extremist views in an extremely large library.

Is Mein Kampf banned, I dunno where you live but it is not banned here in Australia, I when I was 14 read a copy of Mein Kampf at the state library in Melbourne.

It is a pretty badly written book :P

i am pretty sure william s burroughs naked lunch was banned in the us, and the decision was overturned by a court order. ulysses by james joyce was banned in the us until 1933. the full version of the pentagon papers has never been allowed to be published. in the 1950s wilhelm reich had some of his books burned by the fda and all of his books were prohibited from being reprinted until references to orgone energy were removed. and i'm sure there are more.
