Well one thing i can say about all the oses ive tried many fail to have good hardware support. thats a must in an ever growing technology age. albiet alot of hardware developers could help and stick to a protocol, but like thats gonna happen. secondly i think it should be small and to the point but not to small that it lacks on uses. the old mac os is a prime example of lacking, a single click and very horrible multitasking system, i feel windows 98 had the right idea, but with the coming of xp its been so bogged down with graphics and tools that most arent even aware of, how many actually use the dcom system? the only thing that has used it that im aware of was the msblast virus. i think my ideal os would be freebsd based with a gentoo portage system, there isnt a need for a registry like in windows, in my opinion, many times orphan keys get left after uninstalls and it just adds to the clutter, i would like the windows maker for my x windows manager but with a builtin file manager so that console isnt necessary as much for the average desktop user. a remake of the configuration system into one key gui would be nice. im sure there are other things i want but my brains kinda tired

Its funny you mention that you'd like an operating system that's " freebsd based with a gentoo portage system". I'm a gentoo developer working on porting Gentoo portage to work on a darwin system (which is based on freebsd). We are doing this under OS X right now which has an awesome window system (based on gnustep).
