For anyone who doesn't know, Nine Inch Nails is set to release another album in April. This album, titled "Year Zero", is supposed to be a like a soundtrack set around the possible end of the world in 2022. Since then, several tracks have been leaked (flash drives were found on the ground in some of the place where the band toured), several other tracks have supposedly been pieced together, and strange websites and phone conversations have been found from t-shirts and like things.

So, for any other fans following the controversy out there... How do you think the conspiracy sites (I listed some below) play into the album? Do you think they actually connect, or are they just a marketing ploy? And those taped conversations? Related or not? (I haven't heard them myself.)

The sites are
www.churchofplano.com
www.iamtryingtobelieve.com
www.anotherversionofthetruth.com
www.bethehammer.org
www.105thairbornecrusaders.com

:D

Sounds cool. Some video game that came out recently used faked conspiracy sites as marketing ploys, so it wouldn't be the first time if that's what it is. I've never been a huge NIN fan but I will probably check out Year Zero and I'm also interested in Trent Reznor's work on the new QOTSA album coming out in June.

The game was Halo 2 and the site was I Love Bees, afaik.

I have heard the leaked songs, they are..... all right.

NiN was been pretty lame ever since the Downward Spiral. The Fragile sucked and I really wanted to like it.

yep!

what's fun is if you navigate through the site enough, you find the mp3 clips...and they add a very nice background to halo and to the spartens.

and if you look up the cortana letters, those surprisingly connect well not only halo 1 but appear to leave clues to halo 2 and 3.

What I find interesting about Year Zero is that at least 5 songs have been found backstage from various NIN live shows, each one in a different flash drive on a different show. Could this mean Trent Reznor is leaking out the album himself?

Brilliant marketing, really. He knows his audience and is famously techno-savvy.

I think that there's really no other probable solution. If it had been leaked out by a roadie or someone else who wasn't supposed to leak it out, there would have been major damage control after the first song or two. They would have been checking the floors after the band left.

Space, I've only heard Survialism, but I think it's going to be a good album. The song is good, at any rate.

Clearly viral marketing, all of it.
And I don't see why people get so hyped over the spectrographic images. It's just information that has been put there, and can be recovered.

5 songs from the album are at the Nine Inch Nails MySpace. Enjoy. More might be added later.

I'm not so keen on the new songs but they're slowly growing on me.
