Romario didn't just throw it out without sources. He had made a number of Twitter tweets about the topic, including two links:

So it has all started with media coverage on a solely national level in Brazil, and stayed very unheard of in the rest of the world, more than some coverage on Romario twittering on the subject. And what has been written on that has basically been described as "only Romario speculating", so they haven't even managed any basic research of sources.
