I was listening to an interview with Michael Stipe the other day where he was saying that in his opinion the songwriter’s interpretation of the song was the least important and the listener’s is the most important. Anyway I was listening to Maps and Legends and the descriptions of the protagonist makes me think about Aspergers. When it comes to reading people I often feel like the lines

Quote:
Called a fool in the company,
On his own, where he'd rather be

and the repeating lines of
Quote:
Maybe these maps and legends,
Have been misunderstood

relates to the confusion from not being able to get my thoughts and feelings across very well.

But more importantly is just enjoying the song!

Love that title: "Maps, and Legends".

Always thought this was a great and underrated R.E.M. tune. Great interpretation, thanks for sharing!

Cheers. I've always really liked their early work. Although I don't often get the interpretation of the song, you can usual feel the passion and emotion, which for me is what makes a song really good.
