I make CG arts (Computer Graphics), 3D, that is.

Are there other users on WP who uses CG-tools to create artworks (such as Maya, 3DS Max etc.)?

I personally use Blender, because it is free, open source, and completely without limitations.

These are some of my artworks:

I tried studying 3D modeling and rendering classes in college 11 years ago, but it stressed me out so much I actually started crying.

Actually much has changed in the past 11 years. Especially on the rendering side with physical based renders other things. Can definitely see modeling as stressful. Especially if they had you learning on lightwave which was the program schools in my area were learning at that time.

Well, I didn't get very far into my high-school years, before being pulled out of the system as a 17-year-old freshman. I never took geometry, calculus, trigonometry, etc....so 3D modeling was a design nightmare.

I've thought of trying something like Poser to generate automatic people figures for my Photoshop projects; does anyone have experience with that?

with poser, no. There is alot out there even if your not into math. Check out Vue from E-on, it's what alot of my still work is done in. It is made for doing landscapes and is not very hard to pick up the basics.

You could do as I do:

Study at home!

There are plenty of tutorials online for free. You just take a look at them when you have the time and energy.
That's how I learned 3D modelling.
