The point of that quote, as far as I understand is that "punk" can't really be defined, and as such there is really no point in trying to define it.

I think the point of the quote is about the whole idea of poseurs and mocking how punks define things by how "original" it is and disown something once it becomes popular. Anyway, pop punk is also a guilty pleasure of mine, as well as a fair amount nu metal. Generally I think Limp Bizkit is terrible, Hot Dog is one of the worst songs I've ever heard, but their is a couple of songs by them I like. I like all eras of Disturbed, even their nu metal, and I also like Korn despite their angst.

Babymetal. Definitely Babymetal.

I suspect you don't quite understand what a guilty pleasure is.

A guilty pleasure is something you know you shouldn't like, but do anyway.

I have quite a few:
Savage garden's Affirmation cd and their debut cd
Darren Hayes' Tension and the Spark cd
Andrew Lloyd Webber's contributions to musical theater
Certain songs by 3 Doors Down
Certain songs by Creed
Certain songs by Avril Lavign
Certain songs by Bryan Adams

Sometimes I'll get on a Carpenters kick, but I blame my mom for that. She used to play Carpenters stuff in the car when I was a kid.

Edited to add:
Moulin Rouge soundtrack

I consider "guilty pleasures" to be bands or songs I like that either fall below my usual "standards" for good music, or that people would normally get made fun of for liking (not that I really care too much :P). So yes, there is an image component to it, but it's more like "why would I listen to something as puerile and simplistic as Falling In Reverse when I could be listening to Skinny Puppy or Tool?"

Pop-punk as a whole gets sh** on by a lot of people, but I actually consider it to be one of my favorite subgenres of punk, even if it doesn't conform to the "punk ethos". Why? Because I'm in it for the music first and foremost, and if it's enjoyable to listen to, then that's what counts. As far as what I think of the "punk ethos", this famous quote from Billie Joe Armstrong, the frontman of Green Day, exemplifies it:

Quote:
A guy walks up to me and asks 'What's Punk?'. So I kick over a garbage can and say 'That's punk!'. So he kicks over the garbage can and says 'That's Punk?', and I say 'No that's trendy!'

The point of that quote, as far as I understand is that "punk" can't really be defined, and as such there is really no point in trying to define it.

Which brings me to another guilty pleasure of mine, both for being pop-punk, AND for being released during Green Day's most commercially successful period! I'm sure you know what song this is. :D

Warning: a little bit of NSFW language (the clean version is easy to find, but I can't stand it as it detracts from the song's message)

Good point. There's no such thing as real or fake punk, in my opinion. I don't like pop punk, but I've never understood why punk fans have such a big problem with pop punk. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it. Simple as that. Additionally, I used to be a HUGE Green Day fan when I was younger. I honestly thought that Green Day was an amazing band, and their songs meant a lot to me. Nowadays, I don't really like Green Day anymore, but I'll listen to Dookie every now and then. I do enjoy some of Green Day's songs, to some extent.

Because it brings you pleasure. I really don't understand choosing music by any other standard.

If I want to sit and contemplate something complex and sophisticated, I'll put on Bach cantatas or Coltrane. But if I had those playing while working out or cleaning house, I'd keep stopping to focus on the music. So I put on high-energy rock or electric blues, and if it's "puerile and simplistic" it's serving its purpose. I don't feel guilty nor do I think "Dang, I really ought to be listening to Mahler while I jog." That would be absurd.

My wife took piano lessons for a while and once invited her teacher, a grad student who now works as a concert pianist, to our home. It never occurred to us that we should hide my Stones or her ABBA before he saw them. For all we knew he liked them too.

Late 1960's Bubblegum Rock. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubblegum_Pop

Something I "should" have grown out of by middle school or Junior High School as it was known then.

1969 was the year of Woodstock and Altmont. Somehow this was the number 1 song for the year

A bubblegum song marketed to pre teens with an S&M theme that went to number 5 on the Billboard charts. Oh Dear.

Not only is this one of the cheesiest hits of the 80s, it's also associated with a rather infamous shock site (don't look it up, just don't :P). I love it nonetheless.

This song is just an absolute hoot. :D (warning: kind of NSFW)

And for my really, really, REALLY guilty pleasure... (warning, some NSFW language)

What can I say? It's actually kind of a fun song. :P
