in the part of ontario where i grew up (far southwest), we got a lot of detroit radio stations (thank god!). i have so many happy memories of summer afternoons working in the garden in our backyard with my mom, with motown playing on the radio. enjoy! the last track is my personal favourite.

Sixties soul forever!

Motortown had the glitter. But Memphis had the grit.

The Stax-Volt label in Memphis competed with Motown with a more raw bluesy style of soul (Rufus Thoma, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Booker T. and the MG's).Both were great.

Both Memphis and Motown (and Aretha Franklin, and James Brown) are celebrated in the late 80's movie "the Commitments"- the saga of working class kids in Dublin Ireland starting a band that does sixties soul in the era of punk rock.

i used to listen to radio stations playing music like this in my dads car when i was younger.
