I'm baffled as to how Canadian music can go from bands like Lighthouse and BTO 40 years ago to the likes of Justin Bieber and Carly what's-her-name.

Bleh, Carly Rae Jepson. lol As a Canadian I refuse to accept responsibility for Justin Bieber. He was just an innocent little kid from Stratford, Ontario until Usher got his hands on him, so to be fair, I think the U.S.A. should take the blame for that one, or at least Usher. lol (and maybe his parents a little)

That being said there is still a lot of amazing music to be heard in this country (and there was some not so good music here 40 years ago as well lol)

True. I remember hearing a dreadful disco remake of the Quebecois song "Mon Pays" that was on the radio in the mid-1970s. (Fortunately, I've forgotten who recorded it.) I cringed every time it was played.

For a giggle, look up a certain song by Bryan Adams that was on the charts 35 years ago--before he was a rocker. Ouch!

By the way, haven't we disowned Celine Dion? :mrgreen:

I think most of Canada has disowned her, she seems to spend most of her time in the US nowadays anyway. lol As far as old music goes, I actually can't stand Rush. It's a really unpopular opinion to have here, but there it is. I just don't, I can't help it. lol

Tegan and Sara, I guess, are pretty well known around the world. I can't call myself a real fan of them nowadays, but I did like some of their older stuff.

This one is a cover song, but the original is also Canadian:

I have similar feelings about Guess Who. I was never particularly impressed by them.

On the other hand, look up Dominic Troiano, who was quite a talented guitarist. The list of who he worked with is quite amazing.

* Gordon Lightfoot
* Anne Murray
* Joni Mitchell
* Gino Vannelli
* Leonard Cohen
* Celine Dion
* And the group 'The Guess Who!'

None of the YouTube links display for me, so I have to assume that they're all Rush songs. Rush should be the be-all, end-all of Canadian music, and in fact, today (January eighth) is the 36th anniversary of the day when the Canadian government gave them the title of "Ambassadors of Music". True fact, look it up.

Saga was another good Canadian prog band. Godspeed You! Black Emperor is one of the better post-rock bands working today. The Birthday Massacre is an awesome synthrock group. Voivod is an absolutely stunning experimental heavy metal group. I was huge into Skinny Puppy back in my gothic industrial days. Canada also has/had a pretty solid ska scene with the likes of The Kingpins, The Planet Smashers, King Apparatus, JFK & The Conspirators and a bunch more. Barenaked Ladies are kind of seen as a one-hit-wonder novelty act in the States, but I'll be darned if they didn't have some of the best lyrics and sweetest harmonies in all of alternative rock.

But yeah, mostly just Rush. Rush should be on Canadian currency. Rush should be on American currency. Next election, don't even both voting Democrat or Republican, just use Geddy, Alex and Neil as your write-in candidates and watch all the world's problems slip away to the sounds of epic drum solos.
