Many colleges and universities are offering open courseware, which are roughly identical to the courses taught at the institutions themselves but offered online for free.

Does anyone else partake in this, even if it's just a special interest?

I tried to, but a lack of time and lack of basic knowledge didn't help ... you could try coursera.

I take classes online (MOOC's) all the time. Coursera, edX, MIT (http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm) Open Culture (http://www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses) and some others I have used over the past few years.
