I've gotten demos of Reason, Rebirth, Reaktor, and had an official copy of Fruityloops 3. I think the problem with FL was that there were only maybe 2 plug-ins I liked all that much.
As for reason, I may be able to get my hands on it pretty soon. A coworkers brother who's big into producing and is part of a rave promotion crew just started where I work - lol, he as asking me if I wanted to work with him and his friend on a deep, dark minimal techno project.
You should try it. It could be a great experience if you are comfortable in that type of situation. The new Fruity Loops is better than 3, but it still isn't my favorite program. There are lots of free plug-ins (try kvraudio.com) that you might like that should work fine with FL.
