Hey, this is the Gift (formerly Giftorcurse). I'm having something of a dilemma when it comes to my fiction writing. I have two computers (an ASUS laptop and a tablet) and a Brother GX-6750. I'm going to be free from college over summer, so I want to get a lot of writing done during that time. The problem is that I can't determine which writing tool to use: the Brother or Microsoft Word. There are benefits and disadvantages to both. I also have plenty of spare parts for the Brother. What do you think?

I would use Word--unless you have a desire to use a typewriter like fiction writers of yore.

Though Word has its perks, something about using my Brother GX-6750 makes me more productive. There's nothing more relieving than seeing a stack of paper building on your desk.

I guess if you don't want to be distracted by anything I would use the typewriter otherwise I would use word or google docs if you don't have a word processor.

Word and a printer. Best of both worlds then.

Anyone know how to backup the documents on their computer? In NT language.

Ernest Hemingway would write description in long hand, and would write dialogue on the typewriter.

I used to have a somewhat similar dilemma. Years ago, I felt I could only write meaningfully with pen and notebook, as if inspiration could only somehow flow directly my from head through my arm, or some such thing, and then type out the final product. In more recent years, I came to realize that that inspiration flowed just fine from my head down through my arm to a keyboard. That, and Microsoft Word provides a much easier means of correcting mistakes and making revisions. In what to go with, I'd say in a word: Word.

Try Word in full-screen.

press "Alt_V" then "U"

"Esc" will bring back normal view mode with menus and ribbon.

I'd say MS Word though I've never heard of Brother until reading it on here. Though I would like to know the difference between the two.

This isn't exactly an answer to the original question, but I do all my personal writing using LibreOffice Writer. It's open-source (and free), robust and has all the features one needs to do serious writing without paying a usage "tax" to Microsoft. Unless you need advanced features of the MS Office suite (and most home users probably don't). LibreOffice is more than adequate. You can read/ write MS Office files, or just use the native file formats if you don't need inter-compatibility.

I'm on the verge of publishing my first ebook, and it was written entirely using LibreOffice.

i can relate to the sentiment of satisfaction from seeing pages and pages of your writing accumulating on your desk.

if you're not easily distracted, i would go with word.

Another Word Proccessor you might want to look into would be Focuswriter, which has very simple UI.

Teachers may not like typewriter homework. Some of my teachers have required Times New Roman font size 12, for example, which I don't think you can do a typewriter.

all of my teachers have only required that the font be legible and of a size that makes sense.

modern typewriters might have a times new romany font...
