* * *

Actually, they are so close that I can read Norwegian news on the internet without having to resort to translating software. I'm not 100% fluent in Swedish, however, but in Finland, you learn it at school from an early age.

I wasn't aware that Finnish kids learn Swedish in school, so I googled it. Wow, mandatory Swedish... I would assume that isn't too popular with everyone...
Krabo, since you can read Swedish and Norwegian, you can probably read Danish too?

Historical reasons for this mandatory Swedish. It devides opinions, though. I don't mind; being able to express yourself in Swedish or Norwegian, is actually a good thing in Scandinavia. -- And yes, with some practise, I can read Danish.

You may not have been listening to a Finn speaking Swedish. The language we call Finnish Swedish, is a little different from the Swedish Swedish, rikssvenskan.
