Your top 10 favourite death metal albums
I take it you mean "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" from Dimmu’s Deathcult Armageddon album ?
That’s a crappy album and along with All Shall Fall (not a bad album) and Ihsahn’s After (more proggy than anything) they are not very representative of the subgenre as a whole.
If you haven’t heard the classics, first wave and second (very different from each other themselves), how can you know that all bm is complete crap??
You might think the rawer production is a turnoff, but still how can you really judge without hearing it ?
I have no problem with the shrillness of the vocals, they have a black metal type vibe to them which I think gives the band a bit of an edge. To each their own I guess.
I don't mind the screeching side of black metal, as long as it's not unintelligible. For example, Cradle of Filth aren't a black metal band, but Dani Filth used to sing really shrill screams on Dusk and Her Embrace that it's almost hard to understand. Time has taken it's toll on his vocal chords though, he can barely do his trademark screams.
I notice you enjoy Venom and Bathory, Lexington. Both great artists.
Have you listened to much Hellhammer (a couple members would later form Celtic Frost)?? They were another thrashy first wave bm act who were hugely influential for extreme metal.

I listen to a ton of bm and enjoy most vocals but bands such as Silencer are just ridiculous.
The vocals start around 2:40…

I don't mind Hellhammer, but they did influence a lot of extreme metal. Tom G Warrior will always be remembered for Celtic Frost. Tryptikon is a good project as well, Eparistera Daimones was the best album of 2010.
It's always a toss up between Hellhammer and Celtic Frost (Morbid Tales/To Mega Therion era) for me. Tom G Warrior is a legend and when I saw them a number of years ago CF put on a truly amazing show. I will try and check out Tryptikon soon.

I sat through a Burzum album once...miserable piece of work. I could do better with home made recordings.

DCA is a little too mainstream for Dimmu, I prefer EDT or SBD when they peaked. I'm no Burzum fan either, but if others enjoy his material, then I'm quite happy.

Okay, I respect that opinion about Burzum, although I don’t agree with it, I was simply saying I didn’t think what you had listed was representative enough to originally write off all black metal, minus two or three artists, as complete crap.
Personally I’m a pretty big Burzum fan today though I wasn’t right when I started getting into the genre. As far as Dimmu goes my two favourites are Stormblast (original version) and EDT.
I was the one who posted the Silencer video actually. I do not think that the vocals are authentic or truly “tortured” and find Silencer to be a little bit too gimmicky with the psych ward back story and everything to be taken at face value. This is also the case with the hype surrounding Stalaggh for a brief period of time. The rest of the music is not all that intriguing to me either.
I like a number of DSBM artists but Silencer aren’t one of them.
On a side note, do you have a list of 10 favourite death metal albums, TheValk??
Oh right, it was you. The quote pyramids confuse me.
Silencer's only record can be tough to sit through, but I find it pretty rewarding. The second track is my favourite by far and one of the best in the genre, I think. Good example of "less is more" in my book.
As for the "story", I guess nowadays it's too late to figure out who's been spreading that information and for what purpose. I think Shining's frontman is a lot more of an attention whore than Nattramn... since the latter doesn't show up anywhere ever. Silencer seems like a genuine outlet for his expression, and whoever has been hyping them doesn't really affect my perception of the project.
I did post my top 10 on one of the first pages; the discussion went kinda off-topic from there.
That would be the death metal album thread.

The vocals are what’s supposed to usually make Silencer distinctive but they are too high pitched and outlandish for me to take seriously as genuine angst. But you’re right, it’s impossible to know and be 100% sure either way.
Sorry, I must have missed your list earlier. Props on the Atheist and Gorguts mentions. Those two came close to making my list as well.
I will need to check out that Depresy album.

My favourite off EDT:

Best track on EDT in my opinion.

1. Cannibal Corpse - Butchered at Birth
2. Obituary - Cause of Death
3. Autopsy - Severed Survival
4. Morbid Angel - Covenant
5. Dying Fetus - Killing on Adrenaline
6. Deicide - Once Upon the Cross
7. Death - Spiritual Healing
8. Immolation - Majesty and Decay
9. Malevolent Creation - Retribution
10. Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back to Life
I can't get into it. Too much of it sounds like cheesy thrash to me. Vader is obviously an incredible band, but even with them it just doesn't quite resonate. Which is weird because I can really get into black metal (especially the noisy stuff like early Bathory), and there's even some awesome grindcore I like. And I love the related punk genres like crust punk. Maybe it's because I've never cared too much for the whole cinematic horror movie quality.
The exceptions are Gojira and Meshuggah, who are amazing, but do they really qualify as death metal? I don't like Cannibal Corpse, but I do like their fans. If I'm in the right mood Bolt Thrower can be fun, but other times they feel a little too cheesy.
