okay... i know this is going to sound incredibly dumb on my part, but i'm also kind of new to this stuff and want to get into it. i've read all these instruction about making computer music involving midi controllers and midi input, and midi usb... but i've also heard that midi gets a bad rap and is frequently used for jokes (you may seen a few midi art videos) my question, is there another soundfont i can use to make music like .wav? or am i misunderstanding the potential of midi?

MIDI is not a soundfont, it's a sequencing language used by computer programs and electronic musical instruments for the composition of music. Soundfounts are prerecorded banks of sounds used by certain MIDI synthesizers. Many people automatically associate it with the cheesy Roland GS soundfont bundled with most versions of Windows, since it's what you normally hear when you open a .mid file without specifying another soundfont or synthesizer.

This video explains MIDI well:

^^^ this!
Midi is just a set of instructions. The instructions go to a "tone generator"... that's what makes the sound.
