Some of my favorite neofolk* artists are Death in June, Sol Invictus, Blood Axis, In Slaughter Natives, Gaë Bolg, Toroidh, Darkwood, Of the Wand and the Moon, Rome, Sieben, Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio, and Arditi.

Questions: Are you a fan of neofolk? What are your favorite neofolk artists, albums, and/or songs? If you've just discovered this genre through this post, what are your impressions of it?

*Some of these bands may be more appropriately labeled as neoclassical or martial industrial.

Never heard of any of them. I like Folk music. I was raised on it, and am fortunate to live in Appalachia; a region with a strong Folk tradition derived from the traditional folk music brought by the Scottish & Irish immigrants who first settled here. Up the road in Brasstown, the John C. Campbell Folk School teaches (among a great many other things)traditional music, and we have a "songwriter's showcase" about 4 times a year, where regional songwriters perform their own material. I'm also a piper, I play tunes commemorating events from 500 years ago as well as tunes written in the past few decades, and a great deal in between. To me, Folk isn't some arcane fossil, but a dynamic, evolving, living, breathing expression of human experience; both historical and contemporary.
