I love to play chess. During several stretches, it became a bit of a problem as was taking too much time out of my week and specifically getting work done. So I don't play anymore. But I'd like to play if I had more time and didn't have to worry about running my own business.

I never understood why I'm not better than I am, though. I'm quite intelligent yet can't seem to get my rating up much past 1300. I suppose I never took lessons or a systematic approach to openings and specific tactics. I think that would help a lot.

My weakness is in openings because I never cared to study them.

I have the same problem as above. My ECF rating is about 70, which in FIDE terms would be about 1200 to 1250, despite having an IQ of 130- something.

I think it's nerves; I almost always get an advantage, often a decisive one, against 100+ rated opponents (1400-1500 in FIDE terms) and then start to panic about making a mistake, with the inevitable result that I do do so.
