Have dabbled in posting on forums for a few years on and off. I admire how some folks on here, especially veterans, are able to carry on meaningful conversations in this medium. Can anyone make some suggestions about things to do and not to do in order to be a better participant in conversations in threads in this forum?

First, Read The Rules.

Otherwise: Stick to the facts. Cite references often. Express your opinions as opinions. Refrain from sweeping generalizations. Do not feed the trolls. Do not take anything that anyone says personally. Read as many threads as possible. Start no more than 3 threads in one day. Do not start multiple threads on the same topic. Post in threads only to continue the conversation. Stay on topic. Try not to get caught up in other people's personal problems. Stay out of The Haven unless you have a problem or you can express sympathy. Stay out of the Women's Discussion unless you are a woman or you can provide accurate data. Stay out of Politics, Philosophy, and Religion unless you can tolerate insults and disagreements.

There's likely a longer list somewhere.
