Interrupting
Sometimes I want to talk to someone who is doing something else, maybe is on the computer, or is engaged in conversation. In some of these situations, to come right out and say something would be considered "interrupting", and in some, it would not, and it can be difficult for me to tell. (Obviously that can be worked at some by testing and observation.)
I have noticed that, if I stand and wait for someone to be finished speaking with other people, people sometimes comment on this or seem to take note of it, as if it is odd or makes them think I am shy. There are the phrases "Am I interrupting?" and "Is now a good time to talk to you?", but there are certain times that even saying these phrases will be considered interruption. I don't know if waving at someone, or smiling and making eye contact, then looking away, or just saying "hello" to the person I want to talk to before standing and waiting would be welcome- I know waving at people can sometimes be considered an attempt to hurry them.
Does anyone have any guidelines for when one can and cannot interrupt? "Not if they are on the phone, yes if they are talking casually and you are looking for a form, ask if they are on the computer?"
