We're having ice today, had some last night too, & lost power a couple hours starting a little after noon.
Saturday morning creative writers group meeting at a local bake shop has been cancelled.

National weather service says;

Quote:
New Year's Day
Freezing rain, possibly mixed with snow, mainly before 5pm. High near 33. Light north northwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.3 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

That looks like a recipe for chaos!

Last time I had a long power cut it wasn't caused by ice...it was caused by too many fat pigeons sitting on the cable which broke! It was a pain because each time I thought of something to do it needed power....doomed!! !!

Oh no!
Yep, so many things we do depend on power.
If not for the actual doing of it, then for the light to see with to be able to do it.
Like putting decals on the body shell to Ken's locomotive.

I'm glad that there aren't any ice storms where I live. The ice in these pictures is horrendous.

North-northwest of here my parents are getting several inches of snow at their town.
North-northeast of here the town is getting snow where a popular YouTube railfan live camera is.
But we here in the middle, no snow yet, just ice.

One of the gals in our local creative writers group, her husband works for the electric company. He was called in to work around 8:30 this morning.
Just about the time our power came back on some nearby stores, including Walmart, lost power for a while.

Yeah, electrical outages are an issue right now,

Be careful!! Those Ice Storms are way more dangerous than snow. So many accidents on the roads and people just walking.
We lost power for three days from an Ice Storm in 1973, the same one that the movie The Ice Storm was set in. The temperature went down to 37 degrees in our house and all the fish died. People's pipes froze and burst and people were stuck on trains for 10 hours.

The last time we lost power was over the summer from Tropical Storm Isaias.

Oh no, that was so sad. :(

Yes, being careful in this weather is a thing with me; have been 4 times since 1990s that I've fallen in slick weather and ended up with broken bones. 1 time was on the job, 1 time was walking downtown, other 2 were around home.

It was icing and sleeting last night around 2:00 am, the power stayed on till around 9:30am.Then it went out and came back on before 11:00 am.All the trees had a glaze on them but it’s all melted now.
The worst ice storm was several years ago and took out the whole power grid and there was no phone service.I was out of power for two weeks and others longer.
I have wood heat so I stayed snug, used a head light for reading at night ,and a solar powered crank power radio for the news.

That was a bit of an adventure.
And you have reminded me that once upon a time I was shopping for one of those radios until something else in life jumped up and grabbed my attention.
Perhaps that shopping should be completed.
Soon.

It can run off batteries and a regular power cord.I’ve never regretted the purchase.I used it when a tornado came to visit and the power went out for a few days.

The worst Ice Storm in memory occurred in 1998 over parts of Ontario, Quebec, Northern New York State and Northern New England. 34 died and over 3 inches of Ice accumulated in some locales.
