I'm in a game of D&D that used to play on Discord once a week on Saturdays with friends I met from school a couple years ago. These sessions would last around 3 hours. This lasted most of the summer (it might have been cancelled once or twice but I don't remember) until late September. After a session on September 19th, we had one on Halloween night then one on November 21st that was cut short. We haven't had a game since. Every week my DM would come up with a different reason to cancel. At first he would cancel in advance but eventually that stopped being the case. Sometimes it would get within 30 minutes of a session and we'd ask to make sure it's still on, and then he'd say it was cancelled. Me and another player had been talking to each other about this, and he's just completely given up on there being another session. He said this was like the 10th week in a row, which got me wondering how many sessions actually were cancelled. It ended up being thirteen. I guess I really hadn't been thinking about it since the pandemic is making it harder to keep track of time. From everything I've read it sounds like DM burnout, so I asked the DM directly if he was being burnt out but he denied it and just said the current reason was why it was cancelled. If this only happened a couple times, I would believe him. It's just really annoying and doesn't really give me hope that this will get resolved at all. I think this game is only going to survive if we change it to twice a month or something to reduce potential burnout, but if he's just going to keep cancelling and not discussing things instead I really doubt this game is going to last. Sometimes I wonder if it's already over. If he wasn't a close friend from school, I probably would have just left.
