The Grateful Dead were NOT a band that did their best work in the studio. A more proper introduction to the band would be through bootleg concert tapes and CD's, and the 'official bootleg concert CD series entitled 'Dick's Picks' . When they had bad nights, they were BAD, but when they had good nights, they were phenominal.

I had a roommate in college who was a fanatical deadhead and can verify this. He traded and had a ton of their live bootlegs and really that's all he listened to. The studio albums would only come on rarely. I think live improvisation is really what the Dead were all about.

I didn't really get into them heavily but enjoyed some of the live stuff he played sometimes - especially when it went really "far out".
