There's nothing like a brisk walk to the grocery store when the windchill is -12 to wake you up.

It's dangerous stuff if you don't have the right clothing.

I used to go out in weather like this just for fun. Yesterday, a dead car battery forced me to take on the brital weather.

If you have the right clothing, you'll do fine in minus-12 wind chills. Wear a tee-shirt, a heavy button-down shirt, a sweatshirt, and a parka....and you'll do fine. Even better with thermal underwear (though I don't wear it, ever).

And cover your head with a hat or a hood---preferably a hat and hood. And maybe a scarf for your neck.

The dead battery is a b***h, though, especially if you don't have the bucks.

I actually overdressed my torso a bit; was a bit too warm. That could have been dangerous if it was a longer.

Just undo the hood slightly.....that'll let the air in.

The problem was I was beginning to sweat a little, which can be very dangerous. When I go for long hikes in the mountains in cold weather, the rule of thumb is dress in layers you can take off easily. If you start up a mountain and you feel comfortable, you'll be on fire in 20 minutes.

But like I said, it was a short walk.

From my experience, unless you sweat profusely, you’re not in danger.

Ive walked 10 miles in 20-degree F weather very recently, sweated slightly, and was not the worse for wear.

It’s very true that the wisdom of experienced mountaineers supersedes mine, though.

i have been walking 5 miles everyday for the past few weeks
and i live in a mild area of the UK., where the temp rarely drops below zero c

the temp was around zero last week, and the wind was like between gale force 5 and 7

was really cold walking on the beach this week, but i forced myself to walk everyday
all was ok till Friday night, when i started to get a sore throat

went to sleep at 3 am friday night
didn't get out of bed on Saturday apart from to get food
got out of bed Sunday around 5 pm

But feel good today
better now the temp is up a bit and the wind has subsided

Lots of layers. We had a cold snap in the UK recently and I was wearing 2 layers on my legs and 3 on my torso and that was just for indoors!

I marched through the forest in the snow, yesterday afternoon. It was very enjoyable.
