Why do people want to tip flies? It must take ages to gather enough flies to tip. :D

(Actually the first few years of hearing that term being used or seeing signs I assumed that people did tip flies!)

They use miniature trucks to tip flies in.

Yes. The flies wear little safety belts to comply with the law.

The trucks have to pass the buzz emissions tests.

I have no idea what this phrase means or is referring to.

Explain?

Wut? :?

Still clear as mud.

The words you wrote above are what you would use as a dictionary definition of the phrase "Fly Tippers" ??

How about providing the etymology of the phrase? What fly? (insect? fishing lure?) What's a tipper? (someone that topples something over? someone who leaves a gratuity for a server in a restaurant?)

I've never heard this phrase before and it still doesn't make sense to me what it means.

This is.. Not At All what I expected - especially considering the response I replied to above, that was clearly waaaay off.

We have this concept here in Canada, but we don't call it "fly tipping." We don't call dumping out a garbage can "tipping," or "tipping a bin," here either. No one but a British immigrant would understand what you meant if you said that here.

It's simply called "illegal dumping," or something like that - there's no real set phrase for it that I can thinking of besides that. Signs posted at the ends of streets say "Do Not Dump Refuse." Even though literally no one calls it "refuse," and the signs make them sound like someone from the UK decided to use an old English word for garbage. Other signs Might read "No Dumping." But I can't recall if I've seen those words on a sign or if they all say "Do Not Dump Refuse." Or they could say "Dumping Prohibited," something along those lines.

As for fly tipping.. I may have done some of that in years past - but not on city property or to the detriment of the environment; I've simply just unloaded garbage into some unlocked dumpsters behind businesses. There's one large garbage dumpster behind a major grocery store that that entire neighbourhood uses to get rid of odd things here and there instead of making trips to the local landfill just to get rid of one or two items like a broken chair or whatever. But there are a lot of people who do dump things like mattresses and couches on city property because they know that the city will pay to clean it up and they don't have to go pay the dump fees. To prevent this, once a year in the Spring every city here has a "Spring Cleanup," where you can put out large items like furniture or barbecues for pickup. We also have programs that allow people to get rid of fridges and other appliances inexpensively once a year instead of those things being dumped on city property. But some people still dump crap everywhere and it's a very unsightly very costly problem.

It is interesting how words get their names.

I haven’t heard the term before, I thought it was going to relate to tipping in restaurants and stuff. I suppose dumping garbage might be giving flies that kind of tip, in the form of garbage, to stay wherever you put the garbage instead of in your house?
