Although social media platforms have brought a positive thing to the world get people to connect with one another. I do think it giving some people the ability be nasty and offensive to they don't know and say it to them online than to people's faces because they are too cowardly to do so and know they are anonymous and won't be monitored or have the police knocking on their door about their online comments. I do get very irritated by what trolls, obsessives and haters post on social media platforms like for example telling a guy with mental health problems to 'shut up and man up' and 'go and die because no one likes you and you're boring', a black footballer getting vile and racist abuse, a woman getting sexist remarks online about her looks and threatening to rape them etc. Some people say 'oh they are just words not actions' and that they only ways to deal with it is just ignore it or block and delete those people or even shut down the accounts. I do think that these trolls are just venting their own problems, frustrations and narrow-mindedness to get attention and they are the problem and not the person that they are responding too.

Do you mean those kids in high school back before the 1980s who would start nasty rumors by passing notes around?  Do you mean the people at work who whisper about you behind your back at work?  How about the wild-eyed street-people who point out strangers at random and accuse them of the most heinous of crimes?

Non of them ever needed the Internet.

I do mean people like that but I think using the Internet now makes it easier for some people to be more abusive, create lies about people because some people may believe it and say things they wouldn't dare say out on the street and know they would be anonymous.

The fact of the anonymous nature of being on the Internet doesn’t help matters.

Duhhhh….

If there were no internet then there would be no internet trolls. Obviously.

Just like if cars were all eliminated then there would be no drunk drivers. And if we didn't have horses then there would be no horse thieves.

Now that I have answered your question by stating the obvious. Could you further elaborate upon what the issue is that you are trying to explore?

Anonymity does aid in trollery. So that is indeed one reason for the existence of internet trolls.

The Internet makes it possible for a lie to travel around the world before the truth can even be presented.

Agreed.
And there are a lot of kiddy trolls trolling anonymously from their mummy and daddy's bedroom, safely disseminating their vileness.

Here in Australia, they are cracking down on antisocial activity on the net.
About bloody time. 8)

internet trolling is just another extension or tool to the cowardly bully
so if something happened tomorrow and the internet would be down forever
would there still be people who bully

i believe that bullying is perhaps one of the most common human behaviours that exists
perhaps even a fundamental behaviour and mostly certainly just a primate behaviour that
has developed over the many millennia

i am afraid i can't see the human race getting over bullying
it is how a lot of people get the best in life
the best choice for mates, the best jobs, the best places to live

a great deal of real history owes itself to bullying

if the worlds governments were to ban all internet activities
then the bullies would spend more time bullying in the real world

perhaps by stalking / gang stalking individuals in the physical world
perhaps some would become creative and write snide libel based screen plays,
or write nasty slanderous / libel rap's to go over music

you see
most people bullies are cowardly especially if alone and without a mob to back them up
so am afraid getting rid of the internet would not change the nature of the douche bags

its not a new phenomena
i believe it has been a problem since the beginning of time
