Those who prefer toilet paper against/away from a wall, why?

The "This Or That?" thread made me curious about this, but I'm not asking this there since that's off topic.

This is a silly thread, but I am wondering why people prefer to have their toilet paper facing either against or away from the wall. I'm especially curious as to why people who prefer it against the wall like it that way.

I personally prefer toilet paper to face away from the wall, because I feel like something that will be used on your privates being so close to a surface in the bathroom, and possibly sometimes touching that surface is unhygenic... I have issues with germs though and worrying about contamination. It especially is gross in a public restroom. :eew:

I'm going to confuse this issue because the roll lives vertically on top of the cistern....if I use it! If someone else does then they put it on the end of the bath by the taps!

I chose neither because I don't even regularly use toilet paper...

And not just me -- it's how it is from where I came from. There are other means to clean up after doing business.

Do you mean that you use a bidet, or something else? That's probably a lot cleaner and less wasteful than using just toilet paper all the time, if so.

Yes.
Just way less fancier and more manual.

I like it against because I think it looks better that way but only if the holder holds it far enough away from the wall. The one we have now actually rests the roll against the wall so I have it facing away.

Toilet paper is always against a wall in my house because it's easier to reach.

I can rip it better with one hand if it's facing the wall. Otherwise I need two hands.

I keep it away from the wall just to make other people happy, though.

I like to have it facing away from the wall, because it's easier to grab without your hands having to keep touching the wall when you go to wipe with unclean hands.

Bidets aren't very common in the UK and some of us in standard council houses or small apartments have small bathrooms that won't fit a bidet. Anyway I've used toilet paper all my life to wipe myself with and I've never had problems.

Australian and American people need to remember that some other countries commonly have smaller houses with less luxury items. If we do happen to be finicky with butt hygiene then we buy packs of wet wipes to use on the initial wipe, then use toilet paper afterwards.

I haven’t really thought about it....

Very few Americans have bidets. The wet wipes are a good idea.

Yeah, I don't know anyone who has a bidet. I always hear people act like it's weird to have one when they hear people from some other countries often do, because it's very uncommon here.

My family always had it away from the wall because it's easier to reach that way. My family didn't have cats thou. My girlfriend's family keeps it against the wall because they had cats & some of em had played with it. My girlfriend started putting it away from the wall after we moved in together & the cats we had never played with it.
