Autistic Board Game Night/Club
I'm forming a new user group on BoardGameArena.com, it's called AutisticGamers. And the plan is to get a bunch of people signed up, and run game nights on various nights of the week. It's a free site to use, I have a premium membership, so I can set up games to play.
If you're interested in joining, Sign up at BoardGameArena.com, and find and read the rules on "Welcome To", and "SteamWorks", as those are two games I plan to teach/play. The Site has currently 301 games, and new ones are being added every day.
I'll also set up a Discord Server, so we can all talk in real time, instead of using the in-house chat system.
You can play games in multiple ways: Real Time and Turn Based. Real Time, is everyone playing is online at the same time, and you get 2-5 minutes to make your move each turn. Games take as long as they take in reality. Turn based games, are on-going games, where you make 1-2 moves a day, checking the website, occasionally during the day, to make your moves.
Either send me your BGA username, and I'll invite you to the group, or PM me it, and I'll add you to the group.
Looking forward to playing with all you... We won't limit ourselves to just these 9 games, this is just so I can get a feeling for what games you guys/gals like.
Thanks,
Sitko42
Would love to hear opinions about the game site safety and also connecting to discord. I’ve used discord for a mmo I play but never tried it for a board game.
How long is the usual play time for the games you’re going to teach?
It depends on the game. When your in the site, you can click on a game, that interests you, and most of them have a PDF attached, with the rules. So, if you want to learn a game on your own, you can go read the rules.
If people need to be trained, then that's the job of the host of the game...I typically explain, until people ask me to stop. The cool thing about BoardGameArena, is that most of the games enforce all the rules FOR you. You just click on stuff and boom, it happens in the game. Some games have "Undo" options, some do not. For instance, Through The Ages (board game version of computer game: Civilization), has an undo function, so you can try turns out until you find the best one, and then just pass at the end of the turn. Better for turn based games than realtime games, YOU CAN do that with TTA when playing realtime, but it irritates everyone else.
Game site security? You provide the info to the app, that you choose, so there really doesn't need to be security beyond that, if I understand what your asking. If you've used Discord before, again, not sure what your asking.
Of the games I listed above:
"Welcome To" takes about 20 minutes to play, probably about 3 minutes to teach.
"Through the Ages" takes about 20-30 minutes to teach (I suppose, I'm still learning it), and about 2-3 hours to play (realtime).
"SteamWorks" takes about 5-10 minutes to learn, and I've never played it realtime, only Turn based.
(OK, I tired of doing this...it's variable.)
I haven't been on BGA for a while (I'm rarely on a computer, and I don't care for the mobile optimization of a lot of the games I've tried), but you're welcome to add me if you'd like. My username on there is Totalingtea . As far as those particular games, I haven't played any of them on the site nor in person, but I'm familiar with them in passing from BGG and Dice Tower type situations.
