Sooo Summertime towns burned down, then a few weeks back cities were underwater, and now e'erything is freezing.

https://globalnews.ca/news/8476924/b-c- ... s-continue

We have the most moderate climate in the country. It doesn't typically get this cold here.. so much so that many drivers don't even bother with snow tires. But now it's cold. Not so bad for me, personally, home is warm/whatever - and I prefer it to be really cold and dry vs. a little cold and soaking wet like we typically get. But I've read several posts on FB from around the Province from people who's pipes are freezing or furnaces going out etc.

Homeless people here are most vulnerable - especially outdoors in the elements.. but also the many people living in cars/vans/rv's etc. Homeless people from all over the country come here because if they have to be outdoors, they have the best chance of surviving the winter here. Maybe not so much right now, though. And never mind "traditional," homeless types - there are also a L O T of newly homeless people who simply cannot afford rent, or have been evicted so their landlord can renovate or demolish and build some money laundering thing. Real estate insanity + cold snap = people are literally going to freeze to death.

There's a vid clip or two in the article. Even some covid testing centres are closing because it's too cold for workers.

This is all just climate crisis stuff in action. Time to invest in fire/flood/restoration companies.. maybe heating & cooling companies, too.

Canada pays our bills extracting future global warming to export, so I don't imagine Canada doing much about the problem that pays our bills.

Warmest December I ever remember.I’ve been sleeping with the window open and a fan on.
There is a honeysuckle shrub blooming in the front yard and there were honeybees on it on Christmas Day.
It feels more like spring with temps in the 70’s.

Mebe.. but I have seen a video clip of trudeau addressing oil patch workers in Alberta telling them Canada has no choice but to manage the transition to cleaner energy in order to address climate change. That we can't just keep increasing tarsands production as if our country, and the planet, should just accept it. He also got people to acknowledge that the climate crisis is indeed very real and we as privileged Canadians should be taking the lead on a number of fronts vs. ignoring it. So, mebe Canada will do some responsible things.. mebe.

Over the last couple of years there have been a bunch of articles basically saying it doesn't matter what trump or conservatives or the coal/oil industries say, energy consumption will shift to whatever source costs the least (basic economics) and the price of renewables is now cheapest even without gov't subsidies. It's happening.

Trudeau is very good at talking the talk but never actually taking any steps.

Also true. I've met him a couple times - excellent bullshitter. Definitely highly skilled at saying the things his immediate audience wants to hear - regardless of what he actually does afterwards.

Pond froze, people skating - that doesn't happen here typically.. hasn't really been a thing for probably 50 years or so:

Same thing with ice chunks in the river - not a regular occurence. I bet it used to proper freeze over like 80+ years ago, but we've had much milder winters for decades:

Let's face it, I vote NDP knowing they'll disappoint me, but at least they're honest when they disappoint me by being way close to the policy the Liberals promise me during the election; the Liberals try to sound like they're just as good as the NDP but electable only to end up mostly no different from the Tories on a lot of issues once in power.

I'd rather be disappointed by social democrats who I can expect to at least try to deliver on what they promised vs. liberals who won't even try to implement the most appealing things they promised and who I know will deliver basically 90% of what the conservatives were likely to do when it comes to economic policy and support for oil and gas.

They won't be able to rely on a pretty leader forever though.

I, too, voted for Jagmeet Singh's NDP for a bunch of the same reasons. 8)
