https://bigthink.com/the-present/nano-diamond-battery/

Or is this just total bs vapourware that will never materialize?

If it's realistically possible and achievable.. wow, game changer! (and potentially worth investing in.)

Super cool if an EV battery lasted 90 years and could be swapped into another car or two vs. replacing EV batteries once or twice per car. Eliminates charging, too.

Hmm, maybe if it is all too real the powers that be will squash it and keep it from us. :(

You rang?

:D

The company seems to be hyping a product that is still in development.  However, if the concept is sound, and they can make it work, it may be worth "getting in on the ground floor" by buying a few shares.  Best to wait and see.

Diamond battery is the name of a nuclear battery concept proposed by the University of Bristol Cabot Institute during their annual lecture held on 25 November 2016 at the Wills Memorial Building.  This battery is proposed to run on the radioactivity of waste graphite blocks (previously used as neutron moderator material in graphite-moderated reactors) and would generate small amounts of electricity for thousands of years.

The battery is a betavoltaic cell using carbon-14 (14C) in the form of diamond-like carbon (DLC) as the beta radiation source, and additional normal-carbon DLC to make the necessary semiconductor junction and encapsulate the carbon-14.

Currently no known prototype uses 14C as its source, there are however some prototypes that use nickel-63 (63Ni) as their source with diamond semiconductors for energy conversion which are seen as a stepping stone to a possible 14C diamond battery prototype.

That's the thing - I don't know enough about the chemistry & physics jargon to know if it's legit feasible or total bs.

If it's realistically achievable with a greater than 50% chance of success, it may be worth gambling a few dollars on - not huge money.. maybe the price of an excessive speeding ticket, a few meals out, and a new pair of shoes I don't need. Rather gamble on some realistic long shots than throw money away on the aforementioned.

Oh, it is conceivable; I even supported similar research back in college.  But the hazards were deemed too great for commercial applications -- I think they used the nickel isotope back then.

So that’s the greatest hurdle then? Overcoming hazards of radiation ?

Does this new tech description of encapsulating nuclear waste diamonds within some sort of other synthetic diamond layer sound like it could achieve that safely ?

I would suggest asking the mods to move this to the "Computers, Math, Science, and Technology." Might get more well-informed comments there.

Good point! I've never read or made a post in that forum as far as I can recall, so didn't even think to post it there.
