Evidence Still Lacking to Support Ivermectin as Treatment for COVID-19

After more than 80 studies have evaluated the use of ivermectin, an antiparasitic medication, to treat or prevent COVID-19 in humans, there is insufficient evidence to recommend using ivermectin to treat COVID-19. Large clinical trials to determine its safety and effectiveness are ongoing; but so far, randomized controlled trials have shown no evidence of a clinical benefit for ivermectin.

The studies conspiracists often cite are not in the news because they have significant limitations and are not randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials, which are considered the gold standard of clinical research.  Such trials randomly assign participants to treatment or control groups, enabling researchers to more confidently evaluate whether a treatment led to different results.
