Anyone here know the story of Chris McCandless? The subject of the book and movie "Into the Wild". The book was published circa 1996, and the movie about a decade later. I understand that many high-schools since 2000 or so, require reading it.

I've read many books about Chris. His story and philosophy really intrigues me. I have a feeling that he might have had ASD. I guess maybe this falls into one of my adult ASD "special interests".

He certainly lived his life on his own terms, with no real long-term friends, though he was very intelligent.

Just pre-Covid, I went to Alaska and hiked part of the trail that he spent his last days on. It felt surreal to know so much of the story and actually be there, in a beautiful land so remote.

Could be he was asd. I'm just going by the Jon K book, movie, and what little I read from his sister. The issue with his parents might be cpstd. The ability to walk away from family, the loner, no interest in materialists, different moral code from father, and self sufficient desire would be traits.

Weird I was just thinking about that guy. I’ve read about him and it really sucks he didn’t make it.

could be the moral of the story is avoid Alaska if you have cPTSD. (Some of the letters were pretty brutal, or maybe they just seemed brutal cuz of my cptsd? been about a decade since i read this stuff)

Quote:
The article about McCandless in Outside generated a large volume of mail, and not a few of the letters heaped opprobrium on McCandless – and on me, as well, the author of the story, for glorifying what some thought was a foolish, pointless death” (71). I wonder about the validity of this opinion; perhaps McCandless was a bit foolish – for even Krakauer says that he had a tendency to lack common sense at times – but I certainly do not believe that his death was pointless.

I agree with her, dying while doing what you love is never a pointless death. Lately, I've been dealing with this as a friend recently died while riding the curves.

I remember the Outside article and hearing about the comments.

Hey txfz1 - sorry to hear about that. You're the pro here with so many comments - but, do you want to share info about what happened with your friend? I'm sure many of us would try to help.
