Help, I can't bear the noise from my upstairs neighbours any more, it's causing me anxiety and insomnia.

Last night they seemed to be in one room (the bedroom above our bedroom) repetitively banging and thumping about practically all night long. I put earplugs in AND turned the fan on for white noise but I could still hear them banging about and I hardly got any sleep. :(

It's doing my head in. I want to go upstairs and complain but I don't know how. My boyfriend won't let me because he doesn't want to get on the wrong side of them, and I don't really want them to feel they have to walk on eggshells because of me...but at the same time I can't bear their constant banging noises.

Now they sound like they're tipping hundreds of heavy tools out of a box on to the floor, over and over. What the f**k are they doing?

It's driving me insane. It's causing me severe stress and making me jumpy. I'm fed up. And there's nothing I can do about it. It's not fair.

(Please, no sex jokes).

This is awful. You NEED your sleep! You have to work for a living, after all.

Perhaps you and your boyfriend could try to figure out, together, how to complain to your neighbor as politely as possible without annoying them too much?

Perhaps you and your boyfriend might benefit by studying, together, some of these tutorials on how to be assertive without being aggressive?

Do you rent?
Have you considered moving?
Have you spoken to the realestate agent?

Write a note and slip it under the door. Be very polite and explain the impact it has on you, asking them to change the time or try to be quieter. Keep a log of events so that if it comes to you having to call the council/police for a noise abatement order you have a history that they cannot dispute.

Yes.

Numerous times, it's not as easy as that in this area, also I'd prefer a higher apartment with no-one living above, but my boyfriend requires a ground floor apartment because of his bad knees and most apartment buildings in the UK don't have elevators.

I was thinking of that but I know I'll feel guilty afterwards. I heard them having a massive argument the other day but that didn't upset me because I knew what it was and I felt sympathy. But when there are odd and annoying noises that make me wonder what the F they're doing, it makes me really agitated. I mean, what activity requires a lot of moving and thumping about for like 3 hours in one room, around midnight (no sex jokes, it wasn't that sort of noise, it sounded like feet toing and froing across the room).

The upstairs apartment is exactly the same plan as our's, meaning their bedroom is above our bedroom, and the bedrooms are rather small. There's a couple living up there so I assume they have a double bed, and with a double bed in the small room there isn't much room to move around or do many major activities. So I can't think what they're doing. I feel like keeping a broom beside the bed so I can hit the ceiling with it, but I think that is too petty.

It's awkward because they're not exactly doing anything that breaks the rules, such as having loud music on or all-night parties. So there's not a lot I can do. It's a problem what a lot of ground floor residents have, I've read it when stumbling on different forums on the internet. I just wish the landlords could install some sort of sound proof flooring or whatever it's called, to help make the constant noise of footsteps more bearable, particularly at night.
