The internet, like many technologies, was created with profits in mind . $$
People liked it, discovered it approved it. Then slowly, businesses and corporations saw an opportunity to cash in. Not only can people be rude to one another, as long as they don't question the authority in place, advertissement and ego driven social media post are way too present.
I believe that using the internet for research, to connect on a surface level and to work, because computers were initially for work as well (and gaming 
).
So anyway, the technology is growing fast and it seems that there is more and more cancelling, tracking, hate-speech, etc. than ever.
The internet was a nic ething when I got to in i nthe late 90s. By mid2000s, I wanted to step back a bit but the current was going the other way. There are too many technologies but that's what people want, they are addicted to these and it bring simplicity to their lives.
