I thought I'd make a poll on this because I'm just interested. Most people say that autistic parents having autistic children is just coincidental but I think genes play a part.

Let's see what this poll has to say.

I only have one child, but he’s on the spectrum. He’s less autistic than I am.

My woman is extremely introverted but I don't think she's on the spectrum.

I have one HFA child (that's why I'm here!) and two kind of aspie ones. One of the others has dyslexia, which isn't a big deal, but does make school hard. The other has a chronic illness, which is a much bigger deal. My 4th kiddo is a baby, but he seems very normal.

I do.

I wrote a blurb but decided it was TMI.

Thank you Joe for your nice post.

I have four children, two biologically mine, two not. As far as biological children go, one is neurotypical, the other has ocd, anxiety, and deals with depression. My step children (their parent does have autism in their family, though they are not personally dx'd) has two children on the spectrum, both have anxiety issues, and one has adhd.

Autism does seem to run in my family (both my mom's and my dad's side, though neither of my parents are dx'd with autism). Two of my uncles are autistic, though one denies it since he doesn't believe in psychiatry. Several of my cousins are autistic as well as some of their children. I suspect that both of my grandfathers were autistic just never dx'd due to lack of severity. They would have met the criteria for aspergers had they been born in a time where you could get that dx. I also think genes play a part in this.

Children: One on the spectrum, one other non-nuerotypical

Not seeing that option (ended up choosing options 1 and 6)

There is a point in time I would have said option 3, but we completely missed the boat understanding all that was going on with my daughter. What she CAN do is read people, but it takes more than that to be NT.

Us parents: Husband likely on the spectrum, me a whole mix of never-diagnosed things and theories, but definitely not entirely nuerotypical

Both children on the spectrum.

Different dad's but I'm on the spectrum as is my sister.

My dad is on the spectrum as are my aunts and one uncle

My grandad was on the spectrum and so was my great grandfather. So very strong genetics

As for now I have 2 out of 3 on the spectrum. Third one is only 3m/o at the moment.

Only people who have not been keeping up with autism research say that. A genetic cause of autism is very well-established in the research literature.

And I voted other because I have a 4 month old so I can't tell if she's autistic or not yet.

I am diagnosed ADHD, and I am self diagnosed as being on the spectrum (I am really trying to get a doc to diagnose me).
I don't consider either ADHD or Autism to be "neurotypical" I consider both to be "neuro-atypical".
I find the words "neurodiverse" or "neurodivergent" strange. The opposite of "typical" is "atypical".
I have never been typical and always been atypical, neurologically, behaviorally.

(If you like to think of yourself as "neurodiverse" or "neurodivergent" I mean you no disrespect).

I have one son who is diagnosed both ADHD and Autism. Not neurotypical.
I have another son who is diagnosed ADHD. Not neurotypical.
I have a daughter who is not on the spectrum or ADHD (but gets left and right mixed up, as do I). More neurotypical than the other two.

Autism is highly heritable. Google twin studies and autism.

Genetic evidence for gene-variations that may increase probability for Autism and for ADHD overlap.
I am not convinced they are not really two variations of the same thing.

I answered "other".
