Well if I sold everything I supposed I'd need a new house, because I'd be homeless. :)

My new digs would be a quaint cottage in Cumbria.
Perhaps a holiday home at the Isle of Skye, but I doubt I could afford both.

This is assuming of course I didn't have kids and didn't need to invest it all for their future.

Not interested in cars, travel, bling, clothes.

OH HOLD UP. I might need to hit up some auctions at Sotheby's.

A new house wil tempt me too. I might end up picking a decent new build or something in a small town instead.

Where would you want it to be?

I would say a town 30k strong probably here in Wales. I wouldn't want to live in the middle of a big city but afterwards seeing my dad in a countryside house (really out of the way) it also doesn't appeal to me because it seems like the golden gate bridge, endlessly needing work on such a large building and grounds.

When you say you might like to build a place, do you mean build it yourself or hire construction?
My grandfathers built all their own homes. It's something you don't see much these days.
Not around here, anyway.
The idea is nice either way but I'd also like a place with some history, that feels dug in.

New builds here usually refer to houses newly built by a construction company, usually on some sort of suburban estate but more condensed down compared to the typical one in the US.

Some of them are built to questionable standards but if one is bought from a legitimate company they can be very good.

Are (rich) people able to design their homes, or are they always just done by the building company? Most new builds here are cookie-cutter communities, meaning there's about five or six variations on a layout and they repeat them all along the new street or village whether they're single dwellings or rowhouses. Some of the rich folks contract companies to build sprawling estates or I suppose nice, smaller homes on big parcels of land but that's pretty rare these days.

I'd prefer a small place. Something cosy with leaded windows and bespoke bookshelves. Odd little nooks here and there, where I can read. A wood-burning fire, and nothing painted white. Not much land to call my own, but adjacent to open land and water. Sigh. I could do it if I sold my house and all my investments and stuff, but I always put my kids' needs before my own so I doubt it will ever happen.

If you decided to sell anything you had and cash in your entire net worth to buy one lavish, vulgar item, what would you get away with just about affording?

A large yacht, a super car, an outrageous watch or perhaps something more humble?

I would buy 100 acre ranch in Texas.

Note this is if I cashed out all my retirement.

Always done by a building company and usually a few types of houses are on offer. I prefer to have a medium sized house in a smallish town as it's a happy middle ground between civilisation and house size/maintenance.

I'd buy myself a restored vintage 1965 colour TV set with the legs on the bottom.

A fursuit. Or multiple fursuits.

Yo dog, I got you a fursuit wearing a fursuit, so your fursona can have a fursona.

This thought experiment made me think about what all the stuff I own would realistically be worth if I sold it. I reckon my entire estate wouldn't amount to much over £5,000.

Really, it's a couple of crap cars, a record player and vinyl collection and some out of date tech. Bit sobering. Can't buy much with that.

Maybe a paraglider. Or a really nice Telecaster and a massive tube amp.

I'd get like £1500 at most if I did this, I'm not sure what I could even get with that. Maybe a bed? That is if getting it with the mattress and all the other toppings would still count as one item.

I would buy a 1 year supply of food for SHTF with my personal savings account. I would buy a property-tax free multi-million dollar parsonage with all cash in Austin, Texas if I had to cash out trust fund.I would buy a used church building for my church plant if I had to liquidate all my oil company assets.

A half-decent grand piano? That's the only thing I can think that I'd actually want and is in the right price range. Though as I live in a council flat, I'd have to take some money off to soundproof the ceiling....
