Hi. I'm a new member. I'm 73 years old and always had social difficulties but never realised why until I was 50. I used to think it was the result of the other kids being mean to me when I was at school so that they wouldn't let me grow up properly. They WERE often very mean to me but I realise now that this was because of my condition and not the cause of it. When I was 50 and after a bad tormenting session by a friend's young son I went to see a counsellor to see if he could help. He listened to all my woes and then lent me a book on Asperger's and told me to go and read it. As I read it I was amazed. Over and over again I thought "that's me". It was a revelation. I've never had an official diagnosis and I don't want one. I've read various books on the subject since and they all reflect my condition. Since that revelation I have learned to understand myself much better. Autism never goes away but you can learn to live with it. I look forward to joining the discussions on the forum. Ian Mac.

Welcome to WP! I hope you find some discussions you enjoy here. (And if a specific discussion becomes unpleasant, just leave that discussion...it is not necessary to leave the Planet.)

And the happiness that comes from the diagnosis giving better self-understanding seems to recur here. Certainly I was very happy to finally understand the problems I'd been encountering. (I was diagnosed shortly before my 65th birthday. Others here have been even older when they were diagnosed.)

Welcome! Never too late to learn about one's self and one's relation to the world. Asperger's for me was like a key that explained so many mysteries that had puzzled me.

welcome! I was amazed to learn of my autism in my mid 60s and finally diagnosed at age 68. What a relief to learn that every bad experience of the past (so many of them!! !) was not "all my fault" after all. Knowing my diagnosis has made a wonderful positive difference in my life. I will be 72 this year and I am so grateful to have discovered the answer to so many painful "whys" of the past. Autism diagnosis even in later years can be so healing! Glad you are with us!

Autism never goes away but you can learn to live with it.

How true, how true.
