Trying New Things Is Scary
Women's hormones and how they affect our health are generally not taken into account enough IMO. My periods, pregnancy and general hormones have NEVER been normal, I've struggled horrendously with them all.
Also, my friend pointed out, until the 1960s or so when contraception became widespread, most women were pregnant most of their reproductive lives, so continuous periods are not something that has been studied very much. The monthly wear and tear on our bodies is unrelenting.
As well as the mental wear and tear. Knowing you're going to be very ill every month is not exactly calming or leading to a relaxing, stress free life.
It is an absolute minefield.
way past menopause at this age (almost 72). I was easily angered during "the change". I was on "the pill" for many years and found that I was timid and emotional, it was quite surprising how much my basic nature seemed to change when I got my tubes tied and went "off the pill". Yes hormones do affect both males and females in many ways over our lifetimes!

For 25 years I used to have one week out of every month when I felt normal.
Week 1= building up to the period: horrendous mood swings, crying, angry, depressed.
Week 2= the period. Agonising pain, heavy flow, often running to the toilet, planning everything around toilet breaks, exhausted, pale, dehydrated, nauseous.
Week 3= getting over the period, recovering, rehydrating myself, resting.
Week 4= finally feeling strong and able to cope with life! Hooray!
Back to:
Week 1= building up to the period...
And around we go. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...
People who don't suffer just don't realise the sheer repetitiveness and inescapable-ness of the cycle do they.
Luckily after I had my baby, the doctor suggested the Mirena Coil. God bless whoever invented that miraculous device. It stopped my periods, my mood swings, my pain, nausea etc. I felt normal again.
I know for sure I've gone through the menopause and I have to have the device taken out soon! Argh. Dreading it. Fingers crossed I won't get any weird reactions...I do not do well with hormones, I never have.

I'm glad that the coil has worked well for you. It seems to be hit and miss with the coil and the implant, much like the pill. It either suits or it doesn't. I, sadly, had to have my coil removed in A&E just days after having it fitted. Immediate, continual pain and non stop, heavy bleeding. But, I have got endometriosis and adenomysis, so.
My body has hated synthetic hormones for the past decade, which is another reason I didn't do well with the Mirena.
I'm surprised that you are OK with the levonorgestrel in the coil. Sometimes it is just about getting the right hormone, in the right concentration.
Yes. So many people, even those with ovaries, do not comprehend how absolutely dire the menstrual cycle can be.

I'm sorry you had to get the coil removed, poor you! How horrible.
With me it was the pill. It made me terrified, paranoid, suicidal, endless crying. I couldn't travel or do anything, I was mentally broken. I didn't stay on it for long.
So I was very glad to find that the coil suited me. I did have heavy bleeding for a while but it died down to zero, and no pain! Hoorah! No mood swings. Such a relief. I had been dreading having it fitted due to all the bad experiences of other women but I was very, very lucky.
Maybe because I'd had a baby before that? Maybe that did something to my body? who knows.

Whatever rhe reason, I am glad that it suited you and that you found some relief.
Gynaecological issues have such an horrific impact on so many.
Thanks.
Gynaecology is very complicated and not really understood as it's only a fairly recent area of study. I think for centuries women were just viewed as 'defective/imperfect men' and it was assumed our bodies worked the same as men's, apart from pregnancy and birth etc. But now they are realising that women's bodies are VERY different e.g. women get different signs for when they are going to have a heart attack or stroke.
Also as I probably said, til recently women were pregnant most of the time and we didn't have endless periods. So it's important for doctors to know what having constant periods does to women's bodies.
Hopefully medicine will catch up with gynaecology in the next decades! Sorry that was a bit of a lecture wasn't it!

No apology needed! We all enjoyed your TED talk.

I remember reading a while back, that medical tests for things like inoculations, were only done on men until pretty recently. So they were injecting everyone with the dose of an adult male, and assuming that it would be OK. Women weren't included for years, so side effects didn't take the female body in to account. It is mind-boggling.

Hehe. Maybe?
I could throw in some non periods related material, like, penises...

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, haha.
I read that too about medical tests! Glad it wasn't just me who read it! No one usually believes me!
Also other things are based around men. I watched a documentary on architecture and it said all houses are designed around a 6 foot tall man. (in Britain anyway). So all these high cupboards and things don't need to be high. It's just that houses are a standard size, based on men.
So many things are based on men's needs.

I'm always happy to see a penis thrown in

Literally? Teeheehee.
I kept meaning to reply but mental health things got in the way. So apologies for the lateness.

Oh yes, I'm a fan of penises!
