I know exactly what to say....
in the middle of the night....
2 1/2 years after the incident when I should have said it!

I find phrases like "Everything's fine?" or "How are you?" extremely hard not to answear like genuine questions. I know it's just an opening line and not a question and the right thing is to say "Fine! And everything is fine with you?" Problem is I get a strong negative emotional reaction when I "lie" and don't answear the "question" truthfully. The only solution I have come up with is to not really give an answear and come up with something like "It is what it is.", "Well, I am not getting younger." or jokingly exaggerate "Great! Top of the world, really!" It's not good but it's better than starting a rambling explanation about every current aspect of my life.

I find myself saying the wrong thing a lot. I try very hard to be a Sweet Pea just to offend someone.

I found it comes easier with practice. Lots of folks were out of practice due to the recent isolation.
