First let me define small talk just to relieve any potential ambiguity. By small talk I mean any kind of ordinary familiar conversation, often involving personal questions.

As for conversation starters, I am referring to the use of low effort verbal cliches to begin conversation. "How are you", "What's up", "Sup", and "What are you doing?" are examples.

At work people often greet me with one of these starters, and I respond back enthusiastically. At work or at the checkout lane at a supermarket, I notice that neurotypicals never give detailed or enthusiastic response to these types of questions, despite the fact that they ask and answer them so frequently. As a result I try not to give detailed or enthusiastic replies to not seem weird.

I'll just say that I don't like small talk or conversation starters. However strangely enough, I like starters in person, but I dislike it online. I never know how to respond to someone's "wyd" or "sup" when I'm literally just sitting at my computer watching youtube videos.

As for small talk in general, I dislike talking about myself because I don't think my life is particularly interesting. I have some cool hobbies, but that's it. Some people also get a bit up in my business when I tell them what I enjoy, which I don't like talking about to those who aren't interested in those things themselves. Kind of confusing.

Curious to know what others think.

i hhhhhhaaaaaaate small talk and starters. if i'm not actually interested in how someone is doing, which isn't that often to be fair, I will skip that part to talk to them about the important stuff. for example I will often dm my friends on discord and then backtrack because I forgot to say hi. E.G. below

"so do you think Sumireko's silly dialogue was translated accurately from Japanese

oh also hi"
