The rural population surrounding me at the moment has a lot going for it, being for one thing refreshingly into friendliness and helping one's neighbour, unlike what I'm used to in the big cities I've always lived in before. So I'm gradually transferring my view that only Bohemians, dropouts, oddballs, Anarchists, hippies, and similar weirdos are worth my time, into a broader view that takes in the locals here, who seem different to me but are in fact mainstreamers from a different stream. As long as I don't get drawn into conversation about religion or politics, it works quite well. Many of them are musicians, and I've long thought that most musicians are at least a tad weird in a good way.

Rural population friendly and helpful??? That doesn't happen here. I'm just that weird woman who has no friends.

I found living in London FAR more friendly, people were lovely there.

I don't try to make friends anymore, I can't deal with humans. I always say the wrong thing and people (especially women) take 'revenge' at a later date. For what, I don't know.

I guess the British rural types aren't quite the same as the US ones. We had to move recently, only a short distance but we couldn't carry the mattress so we looked at removal firms. They wanted $350 minimum, so in desperation we begged around the neigbourhood for help. First one we asked summoned his chum, and the two of them picked up the mattress and sofa, popped them into a truck, and installed them in the new abode. They flatly refused to take any money.

Motorists often stop to give way to pedestrians. People in the store tend to get in the way just like they do in England, but over here they apologise and give way when I alert them to the problem.

A musician friend insisted on buying us 2 folding chairs. While we were in Walmart choosing them I somewhat ungratefully expressed a preference for slightly more expensive ones that the ones he'd suggested. He agreed, and wouldn't even let me pay the difference. Much more of this and I might start liking people. 8O

Go west, young lady. Well, south west. But don't mention religion or politics or they'll nail you to a barn door.

No I just think people round here don't like me particularly. Other places have been friendlier. Most people are related to each other here and/or on their phones 24/7.

I suppose a lot of it's the luck of the draw. Though sometimes it's a tad more predictable. Close-knit groups often cold-shoulder newcomers. Still, I don't know how anybody's supposed to know in advance quite what they're moving into, till it's too late. Moving is expensive and hard work.

Yes, we aren't psychic are we: that's info you can't find on the internet! About the attitude in a place.

My cousin said 'all small villages are like that'. I wish I'd known that before we moved here...
