Why do autistic people talk to themselves?

i swear at uncooperative things but i regard uncooperative people as forces of nature.

For me, it's mostly due to a lack of people to talk to. I've had very few friends for most of my life, and at home my parents are often busy with housework (plus they're not interested in many of the things I like). Often I tell myself that I'm talking to one of my stuffed toys, but since they don't actually talk, it technically counts as a conversation with myself.

I reserve my worst expletives for my computer. But then, it is Windows. And apart from the computer, I very rarely indulge in direct verbal abuse, unless sarcasm counts.

Because I'm just so damn lonely.

i suspect your streetwise skills in this regard exceed mine. i'm more like a deer in the headlights.

I'm lucky to come from a sarcastic family. Dad in particular couldn't hold his tongue to save his life. Mum told me that my mouth would be the death of me, but miraculously I'm still walking about, though I've had a few near misses from answering back and yanking the chains of people who in some respects were more powerful and dangerous than I was.

As someone who has done this habitually throughout my life, I think the main reason for me at least is that it relieves stress and eases the mind (a form of stimming). Also serves as a neuro-diverse way of entertaining yourself as it's often topics that most others probably wouldn't care to hear so much about.
As for the reason why others who aren't autistic don't like this or find it odd, it's likely because doing it out in public or in spaces with other people around is not considered the social norm. Non-autistic people probably partake in the same sort of behavior when they are in solitude, but not in the presence of others. I would not be ashamed of this. Everyone has their own manner of calming / entertaining themselves, but it's probably better to be socially aware of when this is and is not done.
