Being a veteran doesn’t mean that a person is necessarily a good person. Most women who served in the military who have PTSD have it because they were sexually assaulted by fellow service people, and it often goes unreported.

With that being said, I certainly believe that veterans should be given more practical support (as should other people). I just don’t believe in thanking them for their service constantly, unlike some people I know.

It would suck to find oneself fighting in a stupid war that one doesn’t believe in, especially if it was due to being duped by patriotic propaganda. The US has engaged in numerous conflicts that should’ve been avoided, so enlisting in the first place is probably not a great idea although people might think it is if they’ve been drinking the Koolaid. Obviously, we need people to serve though.

A lot of people join because they can’t figure out what else to do with their lives and/or want scholarship money for college, so joining is very often more about self-interest than selflessness.

At any rate, on an individual basis, I respect people, veterans or otherwise, until they give me a reason not to.
