Hello, first post here. I am 42 and have never been diagnosed but have recently made the realization that it is highly likely that I am on the spectrum. I have served successfully in the US military for 17 years. I would like to seek diagnosis to help me understand myself better, but am not necessarily looking for any support or accommodations professionally. I am afraid if I seek diagnosis while still serving actively, how it would effect my service and retirement. Does anyone out there have any experience??

I know that if you have an ASD diagnosis the armed services will not enlist you.

I doubt there is anything good that could come from an autism diagnosis. If you must, wait until you have your twenty years in.

I have experience in the military with undiagnosed autism. It did not go well.

a psychiatric social worker [a reservist in my army AIT] dx'ed me informally, said i was likely autistic in his professional opinion. i did not understand that at all at the time, i had to age into understanding it, this light bulb of comprehension didn't flash in my noggin 'til my late 30s. if only there was more expertise available back in the dark ages [70s and 80s].

I always wanted to be in the military but my autism diagnosis ruined my chances of being in the Marines because they would not take me because I was diagnosed.I wish I was not diagnosed.I would wait to get a diagnosis or not get one at all.I would likely be in the Marines right now if it were not for that so that autism diagnosis totally ruined my life.
