I only started listening to his albums two days ago, and I like what I hear, especially Elvis Country and Elvis in Memphis. His first two albums , Elvis and Elvis Presley are hit and miss, mostly because the original releases didn't include the famous singles like Love Me Tender and Hound Dog, etc., although newly remastered versions have included those singles.

So anyone else here an Elvis fan?

I like to grow my sideburns as long as the King's, but I can't accurately say that I am a big fan.

I've liked him since I saw him on the Ed Sullivan Show when I was six. He must have been very sexy, because I asked Mom if liking Elvis was a sin. (No.)

There's a money-grubbing tendency to package the hits with the misses, so we'll buy more.

When I heard on the radio in August 1977 that he had died, it was like some terrible April Fool's joke. Elvis did far more than make records and films. His impact on emerging musicians from the 1950s on was huge. He wasn't my favourite performer but I had enormous respect for what he achieved in a relatively short lifetime of 40-odd years. If you haven't seen it already, have a look for a video of his big comeback performance in the 1960s - the one where he is dressed in a black leather outfit. It's great.

PS: Oops! I didn't realise the OP posted this thread in 2007!

My kids got interested in Elvis by way of Lilo and Stitch and related media. I picked up on Elvis via “oldies” stations in Philadelphia that we’re playing late 50s early 60s rock and roll from the do-wop hay days. I was rebelling against the 80s music then current.

I like Elvis’ early stuff the best and some of his Gospel. If you listen to him along side the other big artists of his day you can tell why he was so big. If you only pay attention to “old Elvis” with the white jump suit when he was past his prime it is much harder to see what all the fuss was about. The “Cornel” ( his agent and “handler” ) didn’t let him grow and drove him into the ground.
