Probably not customers so much as people who are looking for temporary employment.

They hang-out at stores like Home Depot because guys coming to get construction supplies also sometimes need short-term labourers as well.

The word "Chino" is used in some Spanish-speaking cultures the same way that some English-speaking cultures use the word "Asian".

Although the person shouting at the OP may be using the word as a racial slur.

Is the OP's dominant ancestry Asian?

Chinese

Today in the litterbox, a familiar day laborer had the nerve to call me "Chino", like it was my name. I didn't answer. He left the litterbox

Home Depot should just get rid of all of the day laborers, but that's not happening because day laborers have too many "rights". (Rolls eyes?

Several places in other States have occassionally found the Immigration and Naturalization round up of day laborers .
Used to happened , when I had spent some time in Calif.... One might speculate, If they are hanging out at home improvement stores . ?
it maybe possible that they may lack much family support structure?..Often See Hispanics bond together well , and families relatives have a sense of responsibility to La Familia. .So have seen them often form small service businesses..
So , you might consider the "quality " of the people calling you , anykind of nickname, ( you might not like).
Those people, may have less support in their lives in the US .........If you were feeling less than charitable . The Phrase
" La Migre' " ( immigration )..might give a potential illegal immigrant , some pause....
But as a older Woman , mightfind myself discount laborer someday to help with the Yard ?.

i am afraid that if i provoked them (even if i were justified), the day laborers might have the nerve to physically injure me on my way to or from work. there are so many of them and only one of me. they know where i work, which is almost as good as knowing where i live. @ least 2 cops on "standby" @ all times, but they could be anywhere in the large home depot building, they are sometimes busy doing work, and they are sometimes busy standing around flapping their traps, on the phone, or reading the newspaper or anything else. there is no way i could physically protect myself from all the day laborers at the same time. and i certainly do not want to have to tattle to Chief Wiggum.

one of the cops on standby, "Chief Wiggum", has had the nerve to bother me numerous times. he asked me my name, and when i answered, (1) he had the nerve to ask "which asian are you?". and i answered and he said "(my name) is chinese?". (2) nice glasses (they're company safety goggles) (rolls eyes). (3) he had the nerve to call me on his loudspeaker just to say "what's up (my name)?". (improper usage of police equipment). (4) multiple times, he had the nerve to demand that i give him four shopping carts (5) he had the nerve to tell me to get a shopping cart in a different parking lot (employees not allowed to go off home depot property while clocked in).

thank buddha, chief wiggum hasn't bothered me for a couple of weeks.

OP's ethnicity is unknown to me. But in Spanish, «chino» doesn't necessarily refer to a nationality.
In Spanish, "curly hair" is said «cabello chino». In Spanish-speaking countries «chino» is a very common nickname used for people with curly hair. If OP has curly hair, probably that's another explanation.

Independently if they are calling you «chino» because of your ethnicity or your hair, it's less likely a Latino pretends to be offensive. It's part of their culture. I know what they are doing is not correct, but you shouldn't take it personal.
