And I think Columbus said that Japan was "600 miles west of the Azores", and not of "Portugal". But even so...his guess was ludicrous and laughable when you look at a modern map.

But many things were discovered by accident when someone was looking for A, made a mathematical error, and found B instead (like both Neptune and Pluto). No wonder Americans identify with "Planet" Pluto so much! It was discovered the same way our country was.
