The anti-Black racist text messages were an anonymous, massive spam campaign, whose source the FBI has not yet tracked down. My guess would be that they came from either (1) Russian (or other foreign) government agents trying to sow division here or (2) domestic extremists who believe in "accelerationism."
The misogynistic stuff -- mainly on social media, with some in-person manifestations too -- appears to be part of a rising trend, alas. See
