Hey you know, I found out about something the other day accidentally when I was looking up something else.
Students who are from households with regular incomes or below average incomes have an easier time getting into elite colleges than students from households with upper level incomes. International students also may have an easier time getting into well-known and elite schools.
The reason is that colleges have a certain number of students that they will accept by giving them grants or other special deals, but the fancier schools do not get that many applications because regular income and lower income students don't bother to apply. So a "B level" student from a regular household may actually have a better shot at getting into, say MIT, than an "A level" student from a rich household.
